Full Professor of Arabic Studies

The position:

The successful candidate should represent the field of Arabic Studies, with a focus on linguistics, in its full range in both research and teaching, and have a proven track record of international excellence. We expect a philologically and linguistically grounded research profile covering written Arabic such as Classical Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic, Middle Arabic, and/or spoken varieties of Arabic, in the fields of edition philology, contact linguistics, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics, text linguistics etc. In teaching, the successful candidate will offer courses in Classical Arabic and Modern Arabic, as well as topics related to the Arab world, dialectology, and general linguistic approaches. S/he will also contribute to, and share responsibility for, teaching in the BA programme “Oriental Studies”, the MA programme “Arab World Studies: Language and Society”, and, particularly, the MA programme “Arabic Linguistics”. Knowledge of one Arabic dialect, preferably from the East of the Arab world, is therefore required. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to the Faculty’s doctoral programme and to existing research initiatives, such as the Vienna Corpus of Arabic Varieties (VICAV), developed in collaboration with the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

  • Outstanding research achievements, excellent publication and funding record, international reputation

  • Excellent teaching and supervision skills at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level

  • Willingness to take on organisational and administrative responsibilities within the Faculty/Centre and/or the University

The University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor’s programmes and for participation in university committees.
