Engineer: Wafer Measurement Technology (all genders) 1
City: Dresden
Date: Oct 30, 2026
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) is one of the world's leading organizations for application-oriented research. 74 institutes develop pioneering technologies for our economy and society – more precisely: 30 000 people from technology, science, administration and IT. They know: Anyone who comes to Fraunhofer wants to and can make a difference. For themselves, for us and for the markets of today and tomorrow.
Developing innovative technology solutions and bringing them to application - that is our goal at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS.
In our »Center Nanoelectronic Technologies« (CNT) division, research is conducted on 300-mm wafers for microchip manufacturers, suppliers, equipment manufacturers, and R&D partners in cleanroom and laboratory facilities at the “An der Bartlake” site. The CNT offers process and technology development as well as services at the Ultra Large Scale Integration (ULSI) level in the FEoL and BEoL areas for various CMOS technology nodes.
We at the »Interconnect Technologies« group are working on a key topic for current and future microchip manufacturing. Our focus is particularly on BEoL copper metallization. Current research topics include novel materials (e.g., cobalt, indium), as well as the optimization and analysis of existing production processes and the integration of new functionalities. All of these research topics have a direct impact on our processes and process structures. Join us starting in February 2027 to help us determine the significance and implications of this work.
Be part of change
- Working with state-of-the-art technology: You maintain and operate semiconductor production equipment on our industry-standard 300-mm technology platform.
- Maintenance of measurement systems: You are responsible for the existing systems used for in-line measurement of 300-mm wafers and ensure their smooth operation.
- Supporting research projects: You assist process experts and researchers in measuring 300-mm wafers in the research cleanroom—from developing a measurement concept, through execution and data interpretation, to proposing improvements for future projects.
- Helping shape new projects: We want you to contribute your expertise to help shape and optimize metrology concepts for future research and development projects.
- Teamwork and exchange: You will be happy to share your expertise with your new colleagues, offering valuable insights into measurement techniques in the research cleanroom.
What you contribute
- Academic qualifications: You have successfully completed a university degree (Bachelor’s or Diplom FH) in physics, chemistry, microsystems engineering, or a comparable field with a clear focus on experimental work.
- Professional experience: Ideally, you have already gained some practical experience in the field of wafer metrology.
- Technical expertise: You have experience with at least one of the following measurement techniques: AFM, CFM, WLI, ellipsometry, or profilometry, and have also gained knowledge in the design and implementation of measurement strategies.
- Personality: You are passionate about industry-relevant and practice-oriented research. In addition, you are characterized by an independent, organized, and results-oriented approach to work.
- Language skills and team fit: You have very good English skills (B2 to C1 level) as well as solid German skills (at least B1 level). As a team player, you value collaboration in international, interdisciplinary teams and foster a respectful and supportive work environment.
