Professorship (W3) in General and Visceral Surgery

The Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital of Gießen and Marburg GmbH, Marburg site, are seeking to fill a Professorship (W3) in General and Visceral Surgery at the Clinic of Visceral, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery as soon as possible.
Duties and Responsibilities
The professorship covers the field of general and visceral surgery in research, teaching, and patient care. The professorship includes the directorate of the Clinic of Visceral, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery at Universitätsklinikum Gießen und Marburg GmbH, Marburg site. The Clinic of Surgery is part of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) Marburg of the German Cancer Aid, which includes centers for esophageal, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer, as well as a certified reference center of the DGAV and an ENETS Center of Excellence for endocrine surgery.
In terms of research, the professorship is expected to contribute to the research focus areas—cancer research and inflammation/infection—and to provide strategic support to the Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) Marburg as well as furthering the Faculty’s efforts to establish itself as a leader in the field of epithelial inflammation. This requires close collaboration with existing research groups, institutes, and clinical departments. Furthermore, the professorship is expected to play a particularly active role in securing competitive external funding and to contribute to the establishment of new research initiatives of the Faculty and the Philipps University.
The responsibilities associated with the professorship include a strong commitment to teaching, as well as participation in curriculum development (including the continued implementation of the National Competence-Based Learning Objectives Catalog for Medicine, NKLM) and in interdisciplinary teaching projects. Active participation in programs to promote young talents and the Clinician Scientist Program of the Faculty of Medicine is expected.
Requirements and Profile
We are looking for a candidate (f/m/d) in the field of general and visceral surgery with outstanding surgical and clinical-scientific expertise, as well as an internationally recognized research focus in oncological visceral surgery. To further develop the clinic’s profile in patient-focused research and academic teaching, we are looking for an integrative and innovative leader. We expect profound expertise in all common general and visceral surgical procedures, as well as a surgical focus on pancreatic, hepatic, and biliary surgery, including robotics.
The successful candidate should exhibit an outstanding publication profile and a successful track record in securing competitive third-party funding, as well as a strong interest in interdisciplinary cooperation. In addition, the candidate should possess well-established teaching skills and experience.
The requirements for appointment include:
- A completed university degree in human medicine
- Certification as a specialist in visceral surgery and specialized visceral surgery
- Teaching aptitude
- A doctoral degree
- Academic achievements demonstrated by a habilitation or equivalent qualifications, or achieved in the context of a junior professorship
General Conditions
The employment requirements of Sections 67 and 68 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) apply.
The responsibilities associated with patient care duties and the clinical directorate are governed by a chief physician contract with university hospital Marburg (UKGM GmbH).
The universities of Giessen and Marburg, together with the Technical University of Central Hesse, have established the Central Hesse Research Campus. Within this framework, the two medical faculties practice a structured collaboration based on coordinated priorities. Accordingly, candidates are expected to be willing to cooperate across universities and departments in campus priorities and profile areas, as well as to participate in collaborative projects. In particular, cross-site, patient-oriented clinical research and participation in joint clinical trials are required.
